Third Party Insurance is the minimum level of insurance which satisfies the requirement of the laws of Zimbabwe as defined by the Road Traffic Act is called Third Party Only Insurance or Road Traffic Act (RTA) Insurance. The Act requires that motorists be insured for at least US$5 000 against their liability for injuries or death to others (including passengers) and US$2 000 for damage to other persons' property resulting from use of a vehicle on a public road or in other public places (Statutory Instrument 124 of 2009). Unfortunately the level of cover provided by Third Party Only Insurance is basic but this does not exceed the requirements of the Act as you will still be expected to compensate third parties adequately in the event of a loss. 

It is an offence to drive a car, or allow others to drive it, without at least third party insurance whilst on the public highway or public place; however, no such legislation applies on private land. This however does not absolve the owner of the motor vehicle from liability should he/she cause an accident on a private road. Very few vehicles are exempted by the Act, from this requirement to be covered, and these include special government vehicles, those owned by the police, fire brigade and the army.
